Market Replay for Decision Practice
Replay a market sequence as a decision exercise: record the plan first, advance the historical chart, then review what happened.

The value of replay comes from making a decision before seeing later prices. Choose a start time, hide future bars and write down entry, stop and exit conditions. Advancing the chart and then inventing a better entry changes the exercise from execution practice into hindsight analysis.
If you repeat a familiar session, label it as a repeated exercise. It can help rehearse a process, but it is no longer an unseen test. Keep repeated sessions separate from first-pass results in your journal.
A market replay checklist
- Choose the instrument, date, interval and timezone.
- Write down what information is visible at the start.
- Pause only according to the exercise rules.
- Log trades and skipped opportunities before continuing.
- Review mistakes, costs and the final equity sequence.
Replay speed, history depth and instrument coverage depend on the data and tools available in the application. Check current availability when you open the platform.
Replay versus backtesting
Replay focuses on a sequence of discretionary decisions. Backtesting applies a specified rule set across historical examples. A replay session may form part of a test, but it does not replace a representative sample. The comparison guide explains when to use each approach.
Questions about this topic
Can I count a repeated replay as a new test?
Label repeated sessions separately. Familiarity with the future sequence can influence decisions.
What should I record during replay?
Record the visible context, decision time, setup, initial risk, exit rule and outcome before viewing the next part of the sequence.
